Lagos to Host Africa’s First E1 Racing Championship in October 2025

Lagos is set to make history as the first African city to host the prestigious E1 Racing Championship. The landmark event, featuring electric-powered boat races, will take place on October 4th and 5th, 2025.

The announcement follows Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s visit to Monaco over the weekend, where he attended the European leg of the championship. In a statement shared via his official X (formerly Twitter) account, Governor Sanwo-Olu reflected on the significance of the occasion, stating: “This weekend, we were in Monaco experiencing the E1 Racing Championship. It was a good reminder of how innovation, determination, and bold ideas can come together to create something truly groundbreaking”.

He also extended appreciation to the African Export-Import Bank (Afreximbank) for supporting the project, including their investment in Team Drogba, owned by Ivorian football legend, Didier Drogba.

The upcoming race places Lagos alongside global cities such as Monaco, Venice, Jeddah, and Rotterdam, which have previously hosted the championship. More importantly, it signals a milestone for African participation in sustainable innovation and motorsports.
