S16 Film Festival has officially made a call for applications for the S16 Labs, a flagship development programme created to identify and develop the next generation of Nigerian filmmakers. Applications for the inaugural edition are open from 5th to 31st March 2026.
The 2026 S16 Labs will select four feature film projects from emerging filmmakers for a five-month development programme. Participants will receive mentorship and structured guidance to further improve their feature films and personal growth as filmmakers.

What the S16 Labs provide is a support mechanism for selected projects towards completion. This will result in an industry exhibition at the S16 Film Festival later this year, granting the filmmakers leverage for further production, financing and distribution opportunities.
Requirements for the 2026 S16 Labs application include a comprehensive visual treatment with a logline and synopsis. To be eligible, applicants are required to be 18 years or older and emerging or early-career filmmakers (directors, writers) based in Nigeria. They must also submit fiction features that are currently in development, with full or controlled rights to submitted projects, and must also be available to participate in all scheduled lab sessions virtually and in person during the festival.

Founded in 2021 by the Surreal 16 Collective, a trio of Nigerian independent filmmakers Abba T. Makama, C.J. “Fiery” Obasi, and Michael Omonua, the S16 Film Festival is an annual curated Pan-African arthouse film festival bringing together cinephiles from within and beyond the continent—with its most recent edition taking place in December 2025. The launch of S16 Film Labs adds a new dimension to the scope of the Festival, accentuating its allegiance to cinema in Nigeria.
In the light of persistent concerns around storytelling, production quality and distribution, S16 Film Labs comes off as an attempt to recognise, appreciate and refine raw talent towards instituting a culture of excellence in Nigeria’s cinema ecosystem. For new and young filmmakers, this initiative could help breach gatekeeping barriers, exposing the filmmakers to informed audiences while positioning them for global opportunities.
Eligible filmmakers can now apply here for the 2026 S16 Film Labs.
