African artistes: Tems, Tyla, Burna Boy, Asake, Wizkid, and others have been announced as nominees across multiple categories at the 2025 MTV Video Music Awards. The award show will be held on September 7, 2025, at the USB Arena in New York.
Burna Boy earned two major nominations, competing in the prestigious ‘Video For Good’ category with his introspective track, “Higher” and earning a ‘Best Afrobeats’ nod for his collaboration with Travis Scott on “TaTaTa”.

Tyla follows with two nominations, earning recognition in both ‘Best Afrobeats’ and ‘Best Choreography’ categories for her hit “Push 2 Start”. Asake also secured two nominations for his collaborations “Get It Right” with Tems and “Active” with Travis Scott, both in the ‘Best Afrobeats’ category.

Nigerian superstar, Tems, joins the ‘Best Afrobeats’ category alongside Asake for their collaboration “Get It Right”, while Asake also secured an additional nomination for his Travis Scott collaboration “Active” in the same category.
Other nominees in the Best Afrobeats category include Wizkid featuring Brent Faiyaz for “Piece of My Heart”, Rema for “Baby (Is It a Crime)”, and Moliy, Silent Addy, Skillibeng, and Shenseea for the smash hit, “Shake It to the Max (Fly) (Remix)”. Meanwhile, Ayra Starr earned a nomination in the MTV Push Performance of the Year category for her emotive track “Last Heartbreak Song” off her sophomore album, The Year I Turned 21.

Now in its 41st year, the MTV Video Music Awards, popularly abbreviated as the VMAs, is an award show presented by the American cable channel, MTV, to honour the best music videos. Popularly called the Grammy Awards for music videos, the award show has continued to recognise quality music videos and artistes.
