The Africa International Film Festival (AFRIFF) has officially opened submissions for its 2026 edition, inviting filmmakers from across the globe to participate in what has become one of Africa’s most influential film festival platforms.
Under the theme “Frames of the Future: Africa’s Creative Intelligence”, this year’s AFRIFF will build on its reputation as a hub for cinematic exchange, screenings, masterclasses and industry networking. The festival offers a range of competitive categories, including feature films, documentaries, shorts, animation, and student shorts, alongside awards for acting, screenwriting, and directing. Special recognitions, such as the Audience Choice Awards and the Jury Prize for Outstanding Film, will also underscore AFRIFF’s commitment to celebrating storytelling voices.
Submissions for AFRIFF 2026 are now open and must be completed via FilmFreeway. Eligible entries are limited to films produced within the previous calendar year. All non-English or foreign-language films must be subtitled in English, and each submission is required to be accompanied by a concise and complete press kit.

According to festival guidelines, all entries will be reviewed by AFRIFF’s selection committee and programming team, with no alterations made to submitted works. Official selections will be made known in October 2026, with all entrants notified via email. Selected works will also be published on the festival’s website. It is important to note that AFRIFF does not pay rental or screening fees for submitted works in competition.
Key dates for AFRIFF 2026 include the opening of submissions on 6th May, 2026, with a regular deadline of 6th August, 2026 and an extended one for late submissions set for 26th August, 2026. Final notifications will be issued by 3rd October, 2026.
Entry fees vary across categories and submission timelines. Feature and documentary entries are priced at $20 for the regular deadline and $25 for late submissions, with discounted rates available for students and FilmFreeway Gold members. Shorts, animation, and student categories attract slightly lower fees, reflective of AFRIFF’s support for emerging filmmakers and young creatives.
The main occasion of AFRIFF 2026 will run from 1st to 7th November, 2026, including an awards ceremony where the festival jury and special guests will honour outstanding films across respective categories.
