StudioCanal, a subsidiary of French media conglomerate Canal+, has entered into a theatrical distribution agreement with Sun Africa Group (SAG), a member of the Telefilms Group, towards the release of English language feature films across South Africa—an agreement that could contribute to restoring confidence in South African cinema at a critical time when Africa’s film industry is threatened by market and distribution challenges.
Under this partnership, SAG will distribute StudioCanal’s major slate in South African theatres, including animation titles, films from the French outfit’s genre label, 6th Dimension, and select South African productions developed together with M-Net.

The first title to be released is Pressure, a thriller directed by Anthony Maras, starring Andrew Scott, Brendan Fraser, and Kerry Condon. This will be followed by Danny Boyle’s Ink, Elsinore, Full Phil, The Custom of the Country, and Sean Byrne’s The Mannequin, with additional titles expected to join the list.
This burgeoning relationship between StudioCanal and SAG is the latest stride in Canal+’s penetration of the African media landscape. The French giant completed its acquisition of MultiChoice in October 2025 in a deal worth approximately $2 billion, gaining control of subsidiaries like DStv and the group’s total content production and distribution systems, as well as embarking on a restructuring, including the recent shutdown of MultiChoice’s Afrocentric streaming platform, Showmax.
The announcement also follows the recent unveiling of The Road Home, an upcoming film directed by Academy Award-winner Bill Condon and starring Cynthia Erivo and Thabo Rametsi, backed by StudioCanal in partnership with Flora Films. With production set to commence in Cape Town this June on a roughly ZAR 300 million budget, the film explores music as a means of resistance against apartheid, through the inspiring story of the Graceland band, a musical group formed by Hugh Masekela, Paul Simon and Miriam ‘Mama Africa’ Makeba.

“South Africa is one of the world’s most vibrant and influential creative markets, and our partnership with Sun Africa Group marks an exciting new chapter for Studiocanal global distribution,” Anna Marsh, CEO of StudioCanal and Chief Content Officer of Canal+, said in celebration of the partnership. “We are proud to bring a bold upcoming slate to South African audiences while continuing to champion local storytelling and the theatrical experience. We also believe this collaboration with Sun Africa Group will create new opportunities for South African stories and creative talent to reach audiences around the world in the years ahead”.
Debbie McCrum, CEO of Sun Africa Group, also lauded the deal as a major and promising milestone for Sun Africa Group, one that aligns with the company’s commitment to projecting world-class entertainment values.
“Leveraging our distribution expertise, together with our strong relationships and extensive reach within the exhibition landscape, we will ensure that Studiocanal’s films are enjoyed as they were meant to be — on the big screen,” McCrum pledged. “This collaboration not only creates lasting value for both companies but also promises to deliver memorable and magical cinematic experiences to audiences throughout the territory.”
The deal constitutes part of Canal+ and StudioCanal’s expansion strategy across the African continent.
