Afrocritik Announces Key Editorial Promotions

Afrocritik has announced a series of promotions into editorial positions within the platform, reinforcing its commitment to critical rigour and institutional growth across its departments.

Vivian Nneka Nwajiaku, who currently serves as Head of the Film and TV Department, has been promoted to Editor. A senior writer, film critic, television enthusiast, and occasional storyteller writing from Lagos, Nigeria, Nwajiaku brings both critical depth and institutional continuity to the role.

She holds a master’s degree in law but spends most of her time reading about and discussing films and television. Her work is particularly concerned with what art reveals about society’s relationship with women. At Afrocritik, she has covered a wide range of film and television subjects and has led the platform’s film department with distinction.

In a similar vein, Olivia Ndubuisi and Jerry Chiemeke have been appointed Visiting Editors of the platform.

Olivia Ndubuisi is the 2025 Joan Konner Journalism of Ideas Fellow and an Arthur J. Harris Memorial Prize winner. She holds an MA in Science, Narrative Medicine and Politics Journalism from Columbia University. Ndubuisi previously worked as a Senior Broadcast Journalist at BBC News World Service on the Planning and Commissioning team, where her work contributed to the commissioning of Audible’s Podcast of the Year and Best Family Podcast, Dear Daughter.

Jerry Chiemeke will also serve as Chief Media Correspondent for Afrocritik. A Nigerian-born writer, communications specialist, culture journalist, and lawyer based in the United Kingdom, his writing has appeared in publications including Die Welt, The i Paper, The British Blacklist, The Africa Report, Berlinale Press, The Johannesburg Review of Books, Olongo Africa, Culture Custodian, Agbowo, and Brittlepaper, among others.

Jerry Chiemeke

Chiemeke’s work has won or been nominated for several honours, including the Pushcart Prize, the Ken Saro-Wiwa Prize, the Diana Woods Memorial Award for Creative Nonfiction, Best Small Fictions, and the Quramo Writers’ Prize. He is the author of the short story collection Dreaming of Ways to Understand You (2020), the poetry chapbook Notes For Nnedimma (2019), and the hybrid manuscript The Colours In These Leaves (2017).

For his work as a writer and critic, Chiemeke has been invited to major international festivals, including the Sundance Film Festival, the Berlinale, the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF), the BFI London Film Festival, the Lagos Book and Art Festival (LABAF), the Abuja International Poetry Festival, and the UN//SCENE Festival.
